Cemetery Fence Sought

(By Pamela Ouimet)

HELENA--Members of the Brasher Town Board are looking into putting a fence around the old Landing Bridge Cemetery to enable a family neighboring the lot to have a better handle on what land they may use. Supervisor James Dawson noted the cemetery, located between Helena and Brasher Center, only has a handful of stones in it.

Councilman Norval Bennett, who has been working on the problem, said Beverly Wilson and her family has thought for years that a segment of the cemetery property belonged to them. For about 50 years, he said, her family has kept it cleaned up and they plant their garden on some of the cemetery land. "That property goes almost to their building," Dawson said. "We will see if we can legally transfer it- they've been using it. They have a rail fence, a TV satellite dish and the lawn is all fixed up. "It is no use to us as a cemetery. There are three or four stones in there. We need to fence that in," he added.

The supervisor noted that more than 100 years ago the existing house was actually a school. He said while the cemetery is logged as having 2.4 acres, there is only a little section which is actually used as a burial area. "You can't even read the stones," he said. "Years and years ago people went in there. It has since eroded into a situation where people didn't pay attention to it."

Dawson asked Bennett to keep working on the cemetery situation and to keep the board apprised of his progress.
