James E. Ferry

 

Man, Stricken in Church, Dies of Heart Attack

 

(September 19, 1870-April 5, 1949)

 

The funeral of James E. Ferry, 79, Adirondack caretaker and guide, who died suddenly while attending services at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Gouverneur of a heart attack Tuesday, was held at 2 p.m. Friday at the home of a son, Hamilton Ferry, near Childwold. Interment was in the Gale cemetery.

He was born at a community named after his father and had always resided in that area. The family was among the first settled in the region.

Mr. Ferry was for over 40 years a caretaker for the Hollywood club and also served as a guide for hunting and fishing parties. His wife, Olive, died several years ago and a daughter, Clare, had resided with him at the Childwold home.

Other survivors include his son, Hamilton; an adopted son, Paul Ferry, also of Childwold; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Shelly Stephner, Potsdam, and nieces and nephews.
