Napoleon F. Cardinal

Brakeman Killed At Gouverneur

(died August 22, 1911)

Gouverneur, Aug. 18--Napolean F. Cardinal, a brakeman whose home was in Norwood, was instantly killed in the west freight yards here shortly before noon today. He was caught between the tender of an engine and a car.

Cardinal was a member of the crew of west bound freight No. 28, in charge of Engineer Healy Quinn and Conductor Dennie Regan, both of Norwood. The trains came through this village this morning and went to the west yards, to take some more cars.

Cardinal stepped between the engine and a car to make a coupling. As he did not reappear Engineer Quinn jumped from the cab and investigated. He found that Cardinal had been caught between the draw heads and was crushed to death. The body was removed and taken to the scales house and Coroner H. S. Stillwell of Ogdensburg was notified.

No reason is known why Cardinal stepped between the cars to make the coupling, as they are equipped with the automatic coupling device.

Cardinal was 22 years of age and was single. The body will be taken to his home in Norwood.

Cardinal is survived by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Napoleon J. Cardinal of Norwood; three brothers, Charles of Potsdam, and Earl and Arthur of Norwood; and four sisters, Mrs. S. McDonald and Mary and Matilda Cardinal, all of Norwood, and Mrs. F. M. Finnigan of Raymondville.
