LAWRENCE MACKEY.

Lawrence Mackey, 68, residing at 26 Cedar St., committed suicide Friday

afternoon by hanging himself with a belt tied to a bed sheet and

this tied to the footboard of his bed.

His wife, Minnie Brogan Mackey, was in an upstairs room at the time

and thinking that she heard a chair knocked over went downstairs to investigate.

She found her husband lying on the floor beside his bed with

his head held about a foot from the floor by the belt. She attempted to

cut him down immediately but failing in this she called a neighbor, Mrs.

John Mahoney who helped her in releasing the belt. Mr. Mackey, however,

was dead.

Coroner S. P. Brown of this village and Dr. L. T. McNulty of Norwood,

family physician, were called. Coroner Brown pronounced death due

to strangulation, self inflicted.

Mr. Mackey had been in ill health for the past ten years and during the

past two weeks had been suffering from a carbuncle on his neck. It is

thought that he became temporarily mentally unbalanced due to pain with

the suicide resulting.

Mr. Mackey was born on a farm near Norwood on Sept. 24, 1865, the

son of Edward and Jennie Collins Mackey. He spent most of his life in

this neighborhood, moving to Potsdam village about six years ago. He

conducted a meat market in Norwood for several years.

.Besides his widow he is survived only by three sisters, Mrs. Thomas

Roland of Norwood, Mrs. William McCarthy of Watertown, and Mrs.

Nellie Lockwood of Malone
