Maurice A. Quigley Jr.

Norwood Youth, 16, Dies From Polio

(February 8, 1933-September 27, 1949)

Maurice A. Quigley Jr., son of Mr. And Mrs. Maurice Quigley Sr., of River street, Norwood died at 11:20 last night in the Potsdam hospital where he had been a patient since Saturday after he was stricken with polio.

The Norwood youth was ordered to the hospital on Saturday by Dr. Henry Vinicor of Norwood and Monday afternoon was placed in the iron lung. He became paralyzed from the hips down, and his condition grew worse early last evening.

Quigley was born in Norwood on February 8, 1933. He attended schools in Norwood and was a member of the senior class.

During his high school days he was a member of the varsity basketball team, played in the high school band, was a member of the cross country team and played baseball.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Eleanor A., a nurse in the Highland General hospital in Rochester and Evelyn at home, also two brothers, Richard and Charles, both at home.

Funeral services have been tentatively set for Friday morning at 9 a.m. from St. Andrews church in Norwood, with burial in Calvary cemetery. Members of the senior class will be active pallbearers.

The iron lung, which was purchased by the two local colleges two years ago, was rushed back to the local institution from Plattsburg where it was loaned last summer, and aided in saving a boys life.

The body was removed to the Buck Funeral home in Norwood and will be taken to the family home in River street later today.
