Harris J. Russell

 

(January 15, 1924-January 17, 2006)

 

POTSDAM--Funeral services for Harris J. Russell, 82, or Potsdam, will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home, Potsdam, with Monsignor Harry Snow officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, Norwood, with full military honors.

Calling hours are Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service.

Mr. Russell died Tuesday (Jan. 17, 2006) at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he had been a patient since Jan. 11.

He is survived by his wife, Elda of Potsdam; three sons, Dennis Russell of Potsdam, David and Judy Russell of Parishville, and Bruce and Debbie Russell of West Stockholm; three daughters, Janet and Richard Brown of Hannawa Falls, Nancy Fonda of Carthage, and Diane and Joey Cougler or Canton; a sister, Shirley Russell of Potsdam; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond G. "Pete" Russell and Howard Russell; and two grandsons, Daniel Jones and Jeremiah Sommerfield.

Mr. Russell was born Jan. 15, 1924 in Potsdam, the son of Wilfred Russell and Genevieve Dumas.

He attended Potsdam High School.

He was married to Elda Bradish Sept. 10, 1945 at St. Mary’s Church in Potsdam.

He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945 when he was granted his honorable discharge.

For his time in service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Upon returning home he went to work for the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Mill. He was also a paid driver for the Potsdam Fire Department for five years. He then worked construction all over the state until his retirement from C.B. Sherman and Sons in Potsdam.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 164, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1194 in Potsdam.
