Kenneth A. Smith

Electrician

MASSENA--Kenneth A. Smith, 80, of 30 Alvern Ave., died early Saturday at Massena Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident of St. Regis Nursing Home since June 30.

Mr. Smith was an electrician with the Aluminum Company of America, retiring Jan. 1, 1990, after 47 years of service. He had also owned an electrical contracting business for several years.

Born Nov. 16, 1924, in Massena, son of Ivan E. and Gladys Paupst Smith, he graduated from Massena Central School and from Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute with an electrician degree. He served in the Army for two years and was stationed in South America.

He married Helen A. Popple on Oct. 16, 1948, at St. Andrew’s Church, Norwood. She died Nov. 21.

An avid sports fan, he had coached girls basketball for several years, umpired baseball for 35 years, played with the "Old Timers" basketball league and enjoyed playing badminton and golf and hunting. He was a member of Raymondville Golf Course.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Bethellen Murray and Jeanne and Richard Mayer, all of Massena; a son and his wife, Tom and Donna, Rochester; a sister, Shirley F. Courtney, Massena; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins.

A brother, Howard E., and a sister, Betty, died before him.

The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Donaldson Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas R. Shear officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Norwood.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
