Rev. Howard Akland

Retired Minister

NORWOOD--The Rev. T. Howard Akland, 92, former Norwood pastor, died Oct. 7 at McClellan Health Systems Inc., Cambridge.

 The Rev. Mr. Akland was pastor of First Congregational Church from 1958 to 1964. While living in Norwood, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Masonic Lodge and Norwood-Norfolk Central School Parent-Teacher Association.

 Born March 8, 1907, in Grimstad, Norway, he was a son of Hans and Louise Larsen Abrahamson.

 He moved in 1913 to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and in 1916 to Maple Lane Farm, East Greenwich.

 He graduated in 1923 from Washington Academy, Salem, and in 1925 from Granville Teachers Training Class. He received a bachelor's degree in 1930 from Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, and graduated in 1940 from Princeton (N.J.) Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the Albany Presbytery in 1941.

 Before entering the ministry, he taught in rural and private schools.

 The Rev. Mr. Akland served 32 years in Presbyterian and United Church of Christ churches in New York, Vermont and Rhode Island. He retired in 1972 to Scotia and served as an interim minister in various churches.

 He lived from 1979 to 1984 at Lehigh Acres, Fla., and from 1984 to until earlier this year in Leisuretown, N.J. In June, he returned to Maple Lane Farm.

 The Rev. Mr. Akland had special interest in history, the environment, world affairs and current events. His hobbies included gardening, reading and writing.

 Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Helen S. Arner Akland, East Greenwich; a son, Robert, Schenectady; four daughters, Constance Platt, Conklin, Nancy Goodwin, Chicago, Ill., Marilyn Jemison, Alexandria, Va., and Jane Palmatier, Manassas, Va.; two sisters, Dorothea Thygesen, Cossayuna, and Osta Johnsen, Easton, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 Three brothers, Arnold, Leon and Norman Abrahamson, and three sisters, Thonny and Bergljot Abrahamson and Esther Bird, died before him.

 A memorial service was Oct. 9 at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steven McLean, pastor of Argyle Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Ballston Spa Cemetery.

 Arrangements were with Mc Clellan Funeral Service, Salem.
