Retired Teacher

NORWOOD--Helen Arquitt, 95, formerly of Norwood, died Friday evening at Canton United Helpers Nursing Home, where she had resided since Dec. 15, 2000.
Miss Arquitt taught elementary school for 40 years in the East Irondequoit schools in Rochester, retiring in June 1970 and thereafter residing at Lake Placid and Norwood.
She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles and needle crafts.
Born Oct. 2, 1906, in Lawrenceville, she was a daughter of William and Elizabeth Tredo Arquitt.
She graduated from Potsdam Normal School on Jan. 24, 1930, and earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Buffalo State Teachers College in August 1940 and a master of science degree in elementary education from Brockport State Teachers College in June 1959.
Miss Arquitt lived with a niece, Patricia Marselis, in Norwood before moving to the nursing home.
Surviving besides her niece are several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Two sisters, Mildred Maguile and Luella Gonyea, and a brother, Lawrence Arquitt, died before her.
A graveside service will be at a later date. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Buck Funeral Home.
