Illa Jean (O’Neil) Ashley

NORWOOD--Funeral services for Illa Jean (O’Neil) Ashley, 70, of 1012 Pickering St., Ogdensburg, will be held today at 11 a.m. at Notre Dame Church, Ogdensburg, with the Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating.

 Calling hours were held Monday at Frary Funeral Home of Ogdensburg.

 Mrs. Ashley died on Saturday morning (Dec. 8, 2001) at her home.

 Surviving are her husband, Harry; six children and their spouses, David and Tandy Ashley of Norwood, Anne and Gregory Jones of Valdez, Alaska, Don and Judi Ashley of Massena, Gary and Laurie Ashley of Ogdensburg, Maryann Ashley of Canton and James Ashley of Bakersfield, Calif.; a brother, Garnet (Hughie) O’Neil of Pearl River; two sisters, Peggy Baker of Ogdensburg and Violet Ann O’Neil of Malone; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild who is due in June 2002.

 She was predeceased by two brothers, William O’Neil in 1982 and Ernest O’Neil in 1970.

 She was born on July 28, 1931 in Massena, the daughter of William and Dorothy M. Joubert O’Neil. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1950.

 She married Harry Ashley on Sept. 8, 1952 with the Rev. Robert Giroux officiating.

 She first was employed at A. Barton Hepburn Hospital where she worked as a secretary. Later she went to work at St. Joseph’s Home where she was the activities director, retiring after 18 years of service.

 She enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing cards.
