Leona M. Cartier

MASSENA--Leona M. Ashley Cartier, 83, of 598 S. Main St., died at 3:55 p.m. Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James (Marlene) Maculey, Massena.

 Mrs. Cartier owned and operated Ashley's General Sotre from 1944 until her retirement in 1973. She was also a licensed practical nurse and baked for restaurants.

 Born Dec. 26, 1915, in Norwood, a daughter of Theodore I. and Josephine Bombard Perry, she married Lawrence P. Ashley on April 7, 1933, at the Church of the Sacred Heart with the Rev. Edward P. Burns officiating. He died Aug. 17, 1956. She later married Vincent Cartier. He died in 1979.

 She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post Auxilary and Women of the Loyal Order of Moose.

 Surviving besides her daughter Marlene are six sons, Lawrence E., Norton, Ohio, Charles H., Kallispell, Mont., James W., Tonawanda, and Gerald J., Albert "Tom" and William H.. all of Massena; three other daughters, Mrs. Robert (Kathleen) Rush, Mrs. Douglas (Janet) Peek and Mrs. Frank (Gretchen) Topa, all of Massena; a brother, Wilfred Perry, Potsdam; 44 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, 38 great-grand-children and several great-great-grandchildren.

 A funeral mass will be said at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Sacred Heart with the Rev. Richard S. Williams officiating. Burial wll be in Calvary Cemetery.

 Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Phillips Memorial Home, with a wake service at 8 p.m.
