Operated Betty's Diner
(November 21, 1926--June 30, 1999)
POTSDAM--Betty M. Cheeseman, 72, Maple Street, died Wednesday in Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she had been a patient for two days.
Mrs. Cheeseman operated Betty's Diner from 1969 until her retirement in 1974.
Born Nov. 21, 1926, in Potsdam, daughter of Joseph and Iva Christie Dufore, she graduated from Norwood High School.
She married Charles Dumont in 1946. He died in 1968.
She married Harvey Cheeseman on Oct. 4, 1969, in Potsdam. He died March 21, 1985.
Before opening Betty's Diner with her husband, she worked at the Clarkson University ARA Food Service as a cook's helper. After her retirement, she volunteered as a bus driver for rthe St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Steve (Charlotte) Dodge, Fulton, and Mrs. Robert (Wanda) Smith, Madrid; two sons, Charles, South Colton, and Chris, Hannawa Falls; a brother, Ronald, Phoenix, Ariz.; four sisters, Pearl Peacock, Norwood, Maureen Gonyea, Norfolk, Irene French, Syracuse, and Linda Brooks, Bedford, Ind., eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Gerald and Amos, died before her.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Garner Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard J. Venette, pastor of St. Patrick's Church, Colton, officiating. Burial will be in Bayside Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
