WADDINGTON--The funeral for Grace L. Smith Ellis, 72, wife of Carl W. Ellis, James St., Waddington, was at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Phillips Memorial Home in Waddington with the Rev. Harold Beaudry, pastor of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis died at 9:30 p.m.Friday (July 5, 1974), in Massena Memorial Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past several months.
Surviving are her husband, Carl W. Ellis, a World War I veteran and retired employee of the Waddington Milk Plant; 13 children, Mrs. Loren (Margaret) Bogart of Hammond, Mrs. Edwin (Catherine) Ketcham of Waddington, Mrs. Beatrice Welcher of Rome, Mrs. Charles (Winnie) Beaulieu of Louisville, Mrs. Michael (Ida Mae) Vari of Buffalo, Mrs. Frank (Joanne) Perry, of Needham Heights, Mass., Mrs. Roy (Rita) Wilcox of Delmar. Mrs. Walter (Ruth) Ziser of Moirs, Mrs. Lauris (Edith) McMartin of Sidney, Ronnie Ellis, of Feura Bush, James Ellis, of Millerton, Robert Ellis of Troy, and (information missing).
A son, Wayland Ellis was killed in a ship accident May 15, 1952.
Also surviving are 48 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers Leonard Smith, of Rensselaer Falls and Arlie Smith, of Tupper Lake, one sister, Mrs. Leon (Ida Mae) Pringle of Norwood.
Mrs. Ellis was born in Skerry, N.Y., March 25, 1902 a daughter of Durwood and Ida Mae Sheppard smith. The family moved to Norwood and Mrs. Ellis attended Norwood Schools.
She and Mr. Ellis were married July 30, 1919, in the Norwood Methodist Episcopal Parsonage by the Rev. Albert E. Budd, then pastor.
They have spent most of their married life in Waddington. Mr. Ellis was employed over 27 years at the Waddington Condensary when he retired.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Ellis are charter members of Champion Hobkirk American Legion Post 420, and auxiliary. She recently received her 25-year membership pin from the auxiliary of which she is past president.
She was a member of the Waddington United Methodist Church.
The family's favorite charity is the Waddington Rescue Squad.
