Music Instructor

TURIN--The funeral for John M. Gannon, 77, of 6379 E. Main St., will be at 11 a.m. today at Forest Presbyterian Church, Lyons Falls, with the Rev. Naomi Kelly officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 3 p.m. in Flackville Cemetery, town of Lisbon.
Mr. Gannon died Tuesday at FletcherAllen Health Care, Burlington, Vt.
Calling hours were held Friday at Virkler-Percoski Funeral Home, Lowville.
Mr. Gannon was a teacher and began his career at Lisbon Central School, where he also was band director. He continued as an instrumental teacher at Harrisville Central School, where he was vice principal for several years. He then became director of video services at Lewis County Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Lowville and retired as a music teacher at Town of Webb Central School, Old forge, in 1981.
He was a member of forest Presbyterian Church, Lisbon American Legion Post 1342, Lewis County Detachment 754, Marine Corps League, and Lyons Falls Lions Club.
He was a former Boy Scout master and was an avid skier, golfer and woodworker and a skilled musician.
Born July 12, 1925, in Carthage, son of James and Adeline Bender Gannon, he graduated from Crane School of Music at Potsdam State Teachers College and from St. Lawrence University, Canton, graduate school. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II and received a Purple Heart.
He married Bessie "Bette" Thompson on Aug. 21, 1954, at United Presbyterian Church in Lisbon with the Rev. Donald Kauffman officiating.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, William B. Gannon and his wife, Elizabeth Goodman, Cambridge, Vt.; a daughter, Kim Gannon, Derby, Vt., a granddaughter, nieces, nephews and a cousin.
A brother, William, died before him.
Donations may be made to Forest Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 4109 Center St., Lyons Falls, N.Y. 13368, to the Cambridge Rescue Squad or to a charity of ones choice.

(Note: Mr. Gannon did his practice teaching at Norwood High School under the direction of Robert J. Donovan (probably around 1951 to 1953), and played in the Norwood Stage Band, and made guest appearances at concerts at later dates, sometimes in a humorous manner, as Prof. Gannonvitch. CBM).
