Town highway superintendent

REDWOOD--Horace I. "Stub" Greene, 86, Route 37, died Wednesday afternoon at River Hospital Extended Care Facility, Alexandria Bay, where he had resided since September. He had been in failing health for a year.
Mr. Greene owned and operated Stubbys Grill from 1948 to 1953 and Stubbys Grill and Motel from 1953 to 1969. He was town of Alexandria highway superintendent from 1972 until retiring in 1986.
He was a member of American Legion Post 1325, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9258 and Elks Lodge 496, Watertown. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the St. Lawrence River.
Born June 7, 1918, in Norwood, son of Delbert and Armeda Russell Greene, he attended Potsdam schools, He worked at Civilian Conservation Corps camps from 1934 to 1936, when he went to work at Aluminum Company of America, Massena.
He was drafted into the Army in 1941, served in Europe, including Rome and the Rhineland, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He married Marion J. Johnston in 1941. They made their home in Redwood in 1944, She died Sept. 11, 1980.
He married Gayle Rawley Cullen of Alexandria Bay in 1982 on Wellesley Island.
Surviving besides his wife are four stepdaughters and their husbands, Christine and Steven Garrett, Mexico, Catherine and Joseph Malzo III, Yorktown Heights, and Cynthia and Robert Nelson and Cheryl and David VanBrocklin, all of Alexandria Bay; a stepson and his wife, Joseph Jr., and Tanya Cullen, Redwood; two sisters, Hilda Mayo, Potsdam, and Emma Martin, Georgia; a brother, George, Waterloo, and 17 step grandchildren.
Three brothers, Louis, Russell and Francis, died before him.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Cyrils Catholic Church, Alexandria Bay, with Monsignor Robert H. Aucoin officiating, followed by a reception at Alexandria Bay Fire Hall.
The body will be cremated at Frederick Bros. Crematory, Theresa. Burial will be private.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.
Donations may be made to River Hospital, Alexandria Bay.
