Lodene Hathaway (January 15, 1913-September 1, 2009)
Lodene Brown Hathaway, 96, of Otsego Manor in Cooperstown and formerly of Cobleskill died on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
She was born January 15, 1913 in Chipman, NY on the family dairy farm. Her parents were George and Clara (Hough) Brown. Lodene graduated from Madrid-Waddington Central School and received her teaching certificate from Potsdam Normal School in 1937. She taught in one room rural schools in St. Lawrence County before marrying Hoysli Hathaway on July 24, 1938. They were married for 71 years.
Lodene was well known for her writing and had numerous poems and articles published in The Christian Century and other national publications. During World War II while living in Norwood, Lodene was a volunteer in the federal price control program monitoring specific prices established by the government controlling retail food prices. She was Sunday school superintendent in the Massena Congregational Church, an active volunteer in the American Red Cross and the American Field Service for many years. She and Hoysli raised their family in Massena before they built their retirement home in Bloomingdale. They moved to Cobleskill in 1985. After moving to Cobleskill Lodene was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and volunteered at Eden Park nursing home.
She is survived by her husband Hoysli at Otsego Manor, daughters Anne Hathaway and Susan Hathaway of Cobleskill and her granddaughter Rebecca Cash and her fiancé Todd Wormuth of Queensbury. She is also survived by two sisters, Rena Morgan of Canton and Betty Rourke of Clifton Park as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Otsego Manor. Lodene donated her body to Albany Medical Center. Memorial contributions can be made to the choir fund at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cobleskill.
