MASSENA--Charles C. Jenks Sr., 80, formerly of Potsdam and Waddington, died Wednesday at St. Regis Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since Oct. 11.
Born Sept. 14, 1921, in Fulton, son of Hallie and Margaret Runions Jenks, he was a 1940 graduate of Potsdam High School and a 1948 graduate of Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute with a degree in civil engineering. He attended law enforcement officers training school.
Mr. Jenks served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II.
He married Elizabeth Grenier on Aug. 26, 1946, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Potsdam, with the Rev. J. Thurston Travis officiating. Mrs. Jenks died Jan. 11.
Mr. Jenks worked for General Electric, Schenectady, was a manager for P&C Foods in Massena and Potsdam, and owned and operated the Hallmart Convenience Store, Norwood, and Norwood Hardware Store.
He was assistant parts manager for Blevins Brothers Inc., Ogdensburg. He worked for the St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging from 1987 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 1999.
Mr. Jenks received a certificate from the state for five years of voluntary service in the Civil Defense forces.
He was a member of the Potsdam Lions Club and Norwood Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are a son, Charles C. Jr., Belfast, Maine; two daughters and their husbands, Elizabeth "Judee" and Robert Haggett, Norwood, and Susan and Michael Garcia, Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Charlotte Pfister, Watertown, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A son, Theodore, died at birth. A daughter, Robin Hopsicker, a brother, Hallie Jenks, and a sister, Elizabeth Nagy, also died before him.
The funeral will be at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Buck Funeral Home, Norwood, with the Rev. Lee Sweeney, pastor of Knapps Station Community Church, officiating. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
