NORFOLK--The funeral for Lawrence B. Mackey, 79, County Route 36, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Church, Louisville, with the Rev. Kris C. Lauzon officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Mr. Mackey died Sunday at St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena, where he had been a resident since November 1999 because of a brain injury he suffered in an automobile accident in July 1999.
Mr. Mackey served in the Marine Corps during World War II and was a railroad clerk for 30 years until his retirement in 1984 from Conrail.
Born July 5, 1925, in Norwood, son of Harold and Winifred Sullivan Mackey, he was a graduate of Norwood High School and majored in hotel management at Paul Smiths College, Paul Smiths. He married Helen Beckerle on Nov. 22, 1952, at St. James Church, Albany, with the Rev. John Woityna officiating.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church and a past member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 1702, VFW Post 1143, the Norwood American Legion post and Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Mackey enjoyed raising heifers on his farm in Louisville and gardening.
Surviving besides his wife are a son and his wife, L. Michael and Martha, Voorheesville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary F. Mackey and Kathryn and Brian Fairchild, all of Brushton, and Elizabeth and Darrell Charland, Latham; a brother Richard, Spokane, Wash., 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, John, and a sister, Eleanor "Dody" Church, died before him.
