Norwood - Leonard Edward Mackey, 75, of Orlando, Fla., former
agent for the Railway Express Agency in Watertown and
Ogdensburg, died early Monday afternoon, Apr. 3 in the Floridan
Sanitarium & Hospital of Orlando, where he had been a patient
since Sunday afternoon.
Death followed a long illness and was attributed to an ailment
which spread from the glands to his spine.
The body arrived in Watertown Friday and the funeral was held
Saturday morning at 8:30 from the Wilcox & McCallen funeral
home and at 9 in the Holy Family church. Burial was in Glenwood
cemetery.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Margaret M. Daly Mackey,
Orlando, and three brothers, Edward P. Mackey, Earl J. Mackey
and Harold R. Mackey, all of Norwood, as well as nephews and
nieces.
Mr. Mackey was a close friend of William M. Thompson, 80, of
Winter Park, Fla., formerly of Watertown, one-time official of
the old J. B. Wise, Inc., who died in the same hospital Saturday
morning, Apr. 1.
Although ill for a long time, Mr. Mackey was able to be up
and around until he entered the hospital.
He and his wife visited here last summer, returning to Orlando,
where they maintained a winter home, late in the fall.
He was born Sept. 29, 1885 in Norwood, a son of the late John
P. and Emma Ellison Mackey.
He was educated in the Norwood schools, including the high school,
and began his career with the Railway Express Agency, then
the American Express company, in July, 1901.
He was employed in Canton and Carthage prior to 1903 when
he was appointed cashier in Ogdensburg.
Later, he was assigned to Norwood as the agent and then in
1916 was appointed agent in Ogdensburg.
In July, 1918 he came to Watertown from Ogdensburg
when he was appointed agent here to succeed the late P. H.
McCune.
Mr. Mackey continued to serve as the Watertown agent until
Jan. 1, I950, when he retired after 48 years of service, the
last 31 of them as the agent here. He retired because of poor
health and since then he and his wife spent the winters in Orlando,
Fla., returning to Watertown each summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Mackey maintained their Watertown residence
at 238 Winslow street until after his retirement. From 1962 to 1955
they spent the summers as guest of Miss Mary (May) C. Mullen,
910 Gotham street, and, thereafter, as guests of Mrs. Mary
Bourke of Dexter.
On June 24, 1917 he married Miss Margaret Mary Daily,
daughter of Patrick W. and Bridget Murray Daly of Winthrop,
in St. Patrick's church of Brasher Falls, The late Rt. Rev.
Msgr., Cornelius J. Crowley performed the ceremony.
He was a member of the Holy Family church in Watertown
Council, 259, Knights of Columbus, here and a former member
of the Rotary club and the Elks lodge of Watertown. At the time
of his death he was a member of St. Charles church in Orlando
and its Holy Name society.
While here he was a member of the chamber of commerce and
once served as the chairman of the public safety and fire
prevention committee of the organization.
