Joseph A. Mayer

Retired Nurse

NORWOOD--A memorial service for Joseph A. Mayer, 82, formerly of Baldwin Acres, will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, with his son-in-law, the Rev. Robert Shofner Jr., pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Crete, Neb., officiating.

 Mr. Mayer died Saturday at Community Nursing Home, Potsdam.

 Calling hours will be 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the European theater and was a licensed practical nurse at nursing homes and hospitals in the Rochester area until his retirement, after more than 30 years. Following his retirement, he and his wife lived in Tucson, Ariz., where he was a tourist guide in the area known as old Tucson where Hollywood Western movies were filmed.

 Born Jan. 15, 1919, in Buffalo, son of George and Loretta Ryan Mayer, he was a graduate of Buffalo High School and received a licensed practical nursing degree from Rochester General Hospital School of Nursing. He married Barbara Gardner on Sept. 7, 1946, in Epiphany Church, Rochester.

 He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4412, Hudson, Fla.

 Surviving besides his wife are a son, Kevin John, Norwood; two daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Sandra) Markel, Norwood, and Mrs. Robert (Deborah Ann) Schofner, Crete, Neb.; a brother, Raymond, New Port Richey, Fla.; a sister, Loretta Mayer, New Port Richey, Fla., 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A son, Joseph A. Jr., died before him.

 Donations may be made to Community Nursing Home Memorial Fund.

Because of incorrect information provided, the obituary for Joseph A. Mayer, 82, formerly of Norwood, printed in Monday's Times gave an incorrect town of residence for son Kevin John Mayer. He resides in Theresa.
