Joan A. Mellon

Educator

NORWOOD--Joan A. Mellon, 67, New City, formerly of Norwood, died Saturday at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.

 Mrs. Mellon retired as a professor and as an administrator from Edgemont Free School District, Scarsdale.

 Born Nov. 29, 1932, in Norwood, daughter of Leo and Irene Tyo French, she graduated from Norwood High School. She received a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose, Albany, a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence University, Canton, and a second master's degree and a doctoral degree from Columbia University Teachers College, New York.

 She married Donald E. Mellon on Aug. 23, 1964, at St. Andrew's Church. He is also a retired progessor and administrator.

 She was cited in Who's Who in the east and Who's Who of american Women. She was also cited for exemplary educational leadership by the New York Educators for Excellence.

 Surviving besides her husband are a sister, Mary Lou Bowman, Syracuse; four brothers, Richard, Philip and Gary, all of Syracuse, and Robert, Green Castle, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

 A sister, Jane, died in early childhood. A sister, Norma Durham, also died before her.

 A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine's Church, New City. Burial will be Friday in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chateaugay.

 Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home, South Main Street, New City.

 Donations may be made to the St. Augustine's Church Building Fund.
