George E. Merkley

 

(February 2, 1922-November 4, 2000)

 

NORWOOD--Memorial services for George E. Merkley, 78, of Walnut Street, Boyertown, Pa., formerly of Norwood, will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Free Methodist Church in Kittaning, Pa. Interment will be held at Lawn Haven Burial Estates, Worthington, Pa.

 There will be no calling hours.

 Mr. Merkley passed away on Nov. 4, 2000 at Pennsburg Manor, Pennsburg, Pa.

 Surviving are a wife, Jane (McKelvey) Merkley; one son, Robert Merkley of Bechtelsville, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Charles and Lauren.

 Mr. Merkley was born Feb. 2, 1922 in Norwood, the son of the late Charles W. and Pearl (Brownlee) Merkley.

 He received his bachelor's degree from Robert Wesleyan College, Rochester, and a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence University, Canton.

 He was a teacher for 27 years, last as a guidance counselor at the Seaway Technical School in Norwood from 1965 until retiring in 1979. Before that he was a social studies teacher in Lisbon, and a guidance counselor in Warrensburg and Philadelphia, N.Y. He is a former Justice of the Peace in Philadelphia, N.Y.

 He was an Army Veteran of World War II.

 He was a former member of the Free Methodist Church in Norwood. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Philadelphia, N.Y., and a member of the American Legion, Norwood. He was a founder and member of the board of directors for the Seaway Area Youth for Christ, Ogdensburg, and was a hunter's safety instructor in New York.

 In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Seaway Area Youth for Christ, Inc., P.O. Box 386, Ogdensburg, N.Y. 13669; or to the Free Methodist Church, RD 7, Box 368-A, Kittaning, PA 16201.
