Sidney R. Phelps

Sidney Rolland Phelps, 92, of Fairview, died suddenly at his home, Oct. 8, 2002.

 

He was the longtime husband of Caroline "Punch" (Luby) Phelps. They were married for 63 years. He was born in Norwood, N.Y, and was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Sidney P. Phelps. He resided in Cazenovia, N.Y. for almost 30 years and in the early 1970s moved to Tryon, where he lived for more than 20 years before moving to Fairview to be nearer to their daughter, Lyssa, for their final years.

 

Mr. Phelps graduated from the Manlius School (New York) in 1930 and the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Finance and Commerce (Philadelphia) in 1934. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, and coxswain of the 1934 Varsity Rowing Team. His interest in Penn rowing continued to his death. He worked for many years as a publisher's representative for Hastings House (New York), before retiring in the early 1970s.

 

He is survived by five children: Daniel A. Phelps of Wyomissing, Pa.; Linda P. Schenck of Darien, Conn.; Sidney P. Prent of Midlothian, Va.; Elizabeth L. (Lyssa) Cross of Fairview; and Fredrick M. Phelps of Norwich, Conn.; as well as 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

Services were held on Oct. 12 at Miller's Funeral Home in Black Mountain.
