NORFOLK--Rolland F. Phinney, 94, formerly of Norwood and Norfolk, died Tuesday at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since March 5, 2002.

Mr. Phinney served in the Army during World War II in the European theater. He was a miner with Republic Steel, Mineville, and a custodian at Westport Central School.

Born May 29, 1910, in Wadhams, son of Scott and Inez Pierce Phinney, he married Evelyn E. Donahue on Oct. 26, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Mineville. She died April 27, 2001.

Mr. Phinney and his wife were residents of Westport until moving to the Norwood and Norfolk areas in 1999 to be closer to their family. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6962, Mineville.

Surviving are a son-in-law, John P. Plonka, Norwood; two grandsons, Brian S. Plonka, Norwood, and Christopher J. Plonka, Dolgeville, and several nieces and nephews.

A daughter, Carol Plonka, died March 8, 2001. Two brothers, Mervin and Logan, a sister, Elizabeth Gardner, and a granddaughter also died before him.

The funeral will at 21 p.m. Thursday at Buck Funeral Home. Norwood, with Monsignor Harry K. Snow, pastor of St. Andrew’s Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Norfolk.

Calling hours will be noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to United Helpers Canton Nursing Home Activity Fund.
