Lawrence Smith

 

(January 14, 1902-December 19, 1973)

 

Norwood--Funeral services for Lawrence A. Smith, 71, of 29 Baldwin Avenue, Norwood, were held Friday, Dec. 21, 1973 at the Buck Funeral Home, Norwood, with the Rev. Darrell Watters, pastor of the Norwood United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in Hale Cemetery. Mr. Smith died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1973 at Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, where he had been a patient nine days.

 Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lulu S. Smith; a daughter, Mrs. Hugh (Geraldine) Murphy, Norwood; a brother, Homer, Wantagh; two granddaughters, Mrs. Robert (Diane) Raines, Watertown, and Mrs. Lynn (Joan) Henry, Hannawa Falls; and one great-granddaughter, Kristin Raines, Watertown. A son, Robert L. was killed in World War II.

 Mr. Smith was born in Stockholm Jan. 14, 1902, son of George and Blanche Merkley Smith. He attended Norwood Schools. He married Miss Lulu Smith Dec. 22, 1920 at the Methodist Parsonage, Potsdam, with the Rev. M.D. Sill officiating. The couple lived all their married life in Norwood.

 Following their marriage, Mr. Smith was employed by the New York Central Railroad and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. On Sept. 20, 1933 he entered the employment of the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. in the Lower Racquette Division and eventually was named chief operator. He retired June 1, 1965 after 32 years of service.

 He was a member of the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. 25-Year Club, the Norwood United Methodist Church and had held many important offices including membership on the financial, pastoral and usher committees, a member of What Cheer Lodge F. & A.M. and the Scottish Rites, and was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from the Scottish Rites Masonery. He was an exempt member of the Norwood Voluntter Fire Department.
