Moses F. Collins

 

(August 11, 1828-May 30, 1894)

 

Moses F. Collins, one of the best known and respected citizens of Norwood, died at his late residence, May 30th. He was born in Chester, Warren county, N.Y. Aug. 11, 1828, and spent the most of his boyhood with a Quaker family in Peru, Clinton county. At a comparative early age he entered the employ of Ayres Bros., tanners of Peru., as book-keeper and buyer for the firm. In 1850 he moved to Colton, this county and four years later came to this city. He was an expert accountant and penman and while here was connected with the firm of Thos. D. Skinner, also the law office of Myres & Magone. In 1860 he returned to Colton and opened a drug store. In ‘65 he entered into partnership with H. D. Thatcher, of Potsdam, and two years later went to Norwood, bought out a druggist and has conducted a most successful business there ever since. He married Minervia Ayres, Peru, N.Y. in January, 1894. Two children, Herbert L., who has been associated with him in business for several years, and Alice M., wife of J. E. Boynton, of Madrid, and the widow survive him. Mr. Collins joined the Methodist church in early life, and has ever been a consistent, active member, holding the office of superintendent of the Sunday school for over twenty years. The deceased was a staunch friend of the public school, was a member of the board of education of the Norwood Union Free school and academy for over fifteen years during four of which he was president of the board. During the summer months he spent much time at his cottage at Terrace Park on the St. Lawrence and never grew weary of the beauties of the noble river. His funeral was held Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. W. Simpson, assisted by Rev. W. D. Chase of this city, and Rev. Samuel Call of Watertown.
