Food Store Manager
MASSENA--Riley Simser, 78, of 38 Martin St., died at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday at his home. Mr. Simser was a staff sergeant with the Army's Company L, 263rd Infantry, and was night manager with A&P Foods until he retired when the store closed. He and his wife owned and operated the Town Pub, Piercefield, for several years. Born Aug. 8, 1919, in Massena, a son of Charles L. and Florence Mae Riley Simser, he was a 1936 graduate of Massena High School. A member of the undefeated football team, he was inducted into the Massena Football Hall of Fame on Sept. 24, 1993. He married Donalda Empey on Dec. 1, 1946, at St. John's Episcopal Church. Mr. Simser was a member of Earl Santimaw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1143. He was a former member of Hill 19 Hunting Club and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving besides his wife are twin daughters, Debbie and Diane Simser, and a sister, Jane Hazel, all of Massena. A son died as an infant and a sister, Walda Hartford Marquette, died Dec. 24, 1989. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Donaldson Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Darrow officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Norwood. Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
